This is the stone people stop and look at closely. The ground is an even warm beige; scattered through it are the pale sections of fossil shell that gave the bed its name, each one a cut through something that lived in the sea this rock was laid down in. No two pieces carry the same arrangement.

That character sets the rule for using it. Fossil density varies between slabs, so a floor should be dry-laid and sorted before fixing, and a feature wall should be planned from the actual pieces rather than from a single sample.

It shares the Sunny sheet — 0.30 % absorption, 13,300 psi in compression — and behaves like the soft, absorbent end of the range. Interior floors, wall cladding, reception faces and vanities; seal it, and keep it off surfaces that stay wet.

Honed is the finish that shows the fossil best. Polished lifts the contrast; brushed and sandblasted add grip. Supplied as blocks, slabs and cut to size.
